Laugh Out Loud- Mrs. Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus - Week 67

Jenny Matlock

Welcome to Saturday Centus, Week 67, Mrs. Jenny Matlock's writing challenge, where participants are asked to write a PG-rated text to a given written prompt, in any style or genre of writing, with picture (this week), and using only up to 50 words (this week), not counting the three words in the prompt. This is week 67 and the prompt is: 'laugh out loud'.

------

My text follows here:

After years of living outside of the English-speaking world, I started blogging, and had to write in English again. But I didn't recognise all the new acronyms, such as lol. I tried to guess, but couldn't, and finally asked someone online. Now I know that lol means 'laugh out loud'.

------

Word count according to WordCalc: 50

------

Best wishes,

Anna

P.S. Thank you Sharon/Wanderer for correcting me so gently! The expression 'lol' is an acronym of 'laugh out loud' and not really an abbreviation, as I first wrote.

I've always lived in an english speaking world and still couldn't figure out what the abbreviations were until I asked. The sad part is that with all of those abbreviations that kids use on the computer and through texting correct spelling is becoming a thing of the past.

Nicely done Anna !

I had the same problem and in my day, LOL meant 'Lots of Love' rather than Laugh out loud so I used it once when someone was posting something sad, not knowing I had made a major mistake. Luckily, it was to a dear friend who forgave when I explained and I am very careful since then !

Funny how it takes some of us a while to understand our new, ever changing cyber landscape...Peace and blessings

Anna, You are not alone. I've spoken English for my entire life, and these cyperspeak abbreviations get me, too!

Very timely.

Namaste..........cj

Nice, Anna! I only know a few of those little abbreviations or acromyms...many of thme still puzzle me. I think LOL was my first, too.

I seem to find a new abbreviation each week....the kids come up with them faster than I can learn them. Language evolves, I just hope it doesn't become a series of letters without all our beautiful words...what a shame that would be!

I thought it meant "Lots of Love." Thankfully I didn't use it anywhere were laugh out loud wasn't okay too. I don't like these acronyms at all. My age is definitely showing. ^_~

At first I cringed when I thought of how our beautiful words are being so distorted but, it is as with everything else, it changes.
Over the years even English has gone through many, many 'make-over's Such as, we spell things entriely different today than we did in Shakespeare's day and I'm sure if he saw some of our spelling of 'his' precious words, he'd cringe too.
Thing I don't like is that the kids are becoming too lazy to even use correct terms. As in too instead of to.. and 'I no', instead of 'I know' that ...makes me >>> SMH (shake my head)..lolol

ha, I've never lived outside of the united states, and still don't know what most of the abreviations mean. :)

A very cool story, glad you're back here, and abreviations are always confusing anyway! I bet you had to laugh out loud when you thought of this!

I still don't know all those abreviations! Good post, Anna.

There was a story circulating about a woman who thought lol = lots of love, and sent the following text to her daughter...

Jenny, I'm so sorry but your Gran's dead. LOL! Mum

I remember when I first found about about LOL and the rest. Lately, I seem to prefer just using smileys.

=)

PS. Your English is very good!

I know exactly what you mean about the acronyms online. So hard to keep up! Just when you think you have them down someone you are chatting with drops a new one on you like LODLSM, which means Logged On Dressed Like Sailor Moon. Nice job!

My teenage grandkids have even more abbreviations and acronyms that confuse me all the time. I'm sure that their Facebook friends must think I'm a big goofy dope - because I mis-interpret some of the stuff they type.

Sure wish they knew how to spell.

It is not just those who use English as a second language that didn't know that one--a friend at work thought it meant "lots of love" and was sending it to a church group when they were planning a funeral luncheon. Yeah....not so lol, eh?!

Hi Anna. This was cute. I did the exact same thing the first time I read LOL. Also LMAO stumped me for the longest time.

Thanks for linking.
