P is for PEARLS and PENNIES - for 'From A to Z in April', Thursday, April 18th, 2013

P is for PEARLS and PENNIES - The Letter 'P' for 'Blogging from A to Z in April', Thursday, April 18th, 2013.

PEARLS are beautiful and a logical choice for jewellery. There are also many kinds of pearls: freshwater, saltwater or glass-based. Here are some examples found on Etsy. First, a necklace made of glass-based ivory pearls by Kim of Kimmsmith:

Next, a pair of pearl earrings to go with this necklace:

Karen Stahlecker of WillOaksStudios has made a bib necklace with grey freshwater pearls:

From Etsy shop, GowerJewellery, in Wales, we can see a pair of South Sea Baroque Saltwater pearl earrings.

PENNIES are not what you would expect to find in jewellery.

But Barbara Bechtel of secondsurfstudio, makes buttons out of US one cent copper coins.

She domes each button by hand, oxidizes, buffs, and then seals them with a protective wax finish.

Barbara explains:
I started making these artisan handmade copper buttons as a solution for beautiful findings for my own hand made bracelets. Each are hand cut from pre 1982 copper pennies, which are 90% copper.

US pennies made after 1982 are not copper, but 99.2% zinc with a copper plating, therefore they cannot be punched and domed in this unique fashion.

My theme for A to Z is my favourite things that might show up in written stories, poems, paintings or jewellery. This is my list of subjects that I would like to work with.

Best wishes,
Anna

I like the grey pearls. I have seen some like this before but didn't realise it was pearls, I always presumed pearls were white.
The penny buttons are great. I love it when you come across unique items like this. If I had some I would certainly take them off and put onto a new garment when it was worn out!!
